It’s nearing the end of April and the apricot, cherry, apple and pear orchards are in full bloom with their shades of white and pink flowers throughout the South Valley. Even though it’s raining today, the rain is much welcomed here in the Okanagan because we have been so dry. With it comes the promise of and abundance of locally grown fruit and vegetables.
We are so excited to now be sold in Quality Greens. They started in 1995 with one store in Kelowna and added a store in Penticton. Quality Greens is known in the community to be a quick and convenient place to stop for local products with a focus on healthier options.
Their philosophy “Down to Earth” is something they take quite literally and they conduct business in an environmentally responsible manner. They offer cloth reusable bags, cardboard boxes and 100% biodegradable plastic bags. They use biodegradable and compostable corn-based packaging for take away containers and cups in the deli. They offer a variety of Fair Trade, Non-GMO Project Verified and Organic products. Any unsalable food is provided to local food banks; food and waste materials (like carrot tops) are provided to farmers and the SPCA for their animals.
All great reasons to shop at Quality Greens. Stop in and pick up some Herbs & Lavender marinades for your veggies and BBQ.
Bareback Pork Loin for the win
Grillax® is a magazine for grillaficianados around the world. They have Tips and tricks for a grilling nation and wrote a great article about Bareback Marinades. Have a read:
Our friend from Canada, Kim with Bareback Marinades, sent some sample jars after we saw some outstanding photos of dishes prepared with their stuff.
She told us, “You literally can Go Wild and put this on anything … it tastes great.” We were happy to put Bareback to the tests.
The flavor was Herbs & Lavender, and from the initial taste test on a pinch of ciabatta bread, we were excited to get grilling.
The simple ingredients of this fantastic marinade include: olive oil, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, dried Okanagan culinary lavender, herbs, onion powder, garlic powder and brown sugar. That’s it.
We opted for a simple taste test with a pork loin — with the only seasoning to be the marinade. No salt. No pepper. Nothing. Only the Herbs & Lavender Marinade.
We let the loin marinate in the refrigerator for about three hours before grilling. After the soak, we cut our loin in half and prepped the kettle for indirect grilling.
Once the grill reaches 325 degrees, place loins away from the heat and let it go for about 35 minutes. Pull the loins once the internal temperature read 150 degrees.
The loins were sliced into medallions and served with sheet-pan taters and a green salad. The pork was juicy and, oh, so flavorful. To give a visual description, it was like the flavors were plucked from a springtime field, as the flavors were earthy and bright.
We love this marinade, and will use it many more times to come.

Here we are now, in the fall of 2020. Strangest year I have ever lived through. How about you? I am super grateful to have had the opportunity to be at some summer markets in the Okanagan selling marinades and to have met so many interesting people. Some of you are now lovers of the marinades and have become customers. You had faith in how good the marinades taste and took a chance and purchased some jars. Because of Covid rules, I could not offer you a free sample to taste and you bought anyways. Markets have ended for me and I really don't anticipate selling at any local Christmas artisan events. So, when you would like to buy some more, please check out this website for stores carrying our marinades in Alberta and BC. And if there aren't any retailers near you, please order online and we will ship them to your door. Free shipping when you buy a case of 12 and yes, you can mix and match if you'd like.
